Mind your Language: The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum and Scots language in today’s curriculum
10.00 – 15.00
Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, Alloway, Ayr
The newly-opened Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway provides an ideal
venue to consider the place and potential of Scots language activities. A
language in its own right, Scots is now an important part of Curriculum for
Excellence, and its use in schools has been linked to improvements in
all-round literacy, self-esteem and motivation.
This training event, planned in collaboration with the National Trust for
Scotland will include:
• A tour of the exciting and innovative Robert Burns Birthplace Museum
• Presentations by museum staff highlighting the thinking behind the museum
and their plans for delivering education
• A practical session by Matthew Fitt, acclaimed Scots writer and co-founder
of Itchy Coo Books, suggesting ways in which you might incorporate Scots
language activities into your own formal and informal education programme.
Cost: GEM members £20 / Non-members £30
