Using Reminiscence Based Approaches

Lead Speaker: Julie Heathcote is an independent trainer in the use of reminiscence based approaches including from the prompting of memories through to oral history collection. She has extensive experience of training (including for Their Past Your Future) and working with older people, people with dementia, care staff, museum staff and archive groups. Julie has worked on projects bringing different generations together and projects linking museums and libraries with care workers through the provision of old objects as memory prompts.

She has written two booklets for MLA East of England; Collecting Memories; guidelines for intergenerational work between museums, libraries, archives and schools and What's in a Memory? guidelines for people wanting to share their story. Julie frequently contributes to national journals and wrote Memories are Made of This, reminiscence activities for person-centred care which was published by the Alzheimer's Society in 2007.

Areas to be covered include: What is reminiscence? The benefits of using reminiscence based approaches. Avoiding upsetting memories. Reminiscence activity. The importance of listening skills. What role can museum and archives play ? (reminiscing on site, outreach work, loan boxes, networks and partnership working). Advice for reminiscing on and off site. Using objects and memory prompts to engage older people. Chance to look at and handle examples. Creative outcomes from reminiscing.
