GEM Yorkshire and Humber Training Day

Beyond the obvious: A fresh look at handling objects
Date:     Tuesday 27 March 2007

Time:     10.30 - 15.30

Venue:   Harewood House Leeds

Two workshops that take a fresh look at Object Handling sessions with education groups.  The day will include two workshops allowing you to explore how we use objects, the meanings we give them and how we can work with them to encourage imagination and discovery learning.

Workshop 1- Using Objects to Inspire Creative Narrative: Object Dialogue Box

The Object Dialogue box was designed by Norwich-based artists, Karl and Kimberley Foster.  The box gives objects a new twist which encourages exploration and interaction with museum and gallery collections and exhibitions.  In this session we will look at how this box was designed and explore how it is used with Sheffield Galleries and Museums exhibitions and collections.  During the second half of the morning session we will work in teams to give an opportunity to design boxes based on similar ideas and themes.

Workshop 2 Whose Heritage is it anyway?

This thought provoking session will explore the meanings that we give objects, how we use them and how we prioritise heritages and categorise audiences.  It is a useful example of participatory consultation.

There will be a break during the workshop sessions for refreshments and networking.
