Representation - Inside and outside the museum:
Who is representing whom?
Tuesday 2 to Saturday 6 September 2003 -
Manchester
What is meant by representation? How effectively and accurately can we in museums claim to be representative? Do those using collections and their interpretations feel they are accurately represented?
This conference examines these very topical questions and the often heated exchanges which take place not only between museums and their audiences but also within museums themselves. Examples of innovative and mutually beneficial partnerships will go some way to answering the question, “How can we do it better?”
This year, museums and galleries in the north west region welcome GEM delegates to Manchester: a city that has been enjoying a real cultural renaissance with the opening of Imperial War Museum North and Urbis, the redevelopment of Manchester Art Gallery and Manchester Museum and as host city for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
The conference welcomes a delegation of Canadian art gallery and museum educators (CAGE), many of whom are involved at the forefront of work to promote representation.
