The value of museum and gallery education has been recognised; it is now embedded in both Primary and Secondary National Strategies. Teachers are being actively encouraged to engage with the cultural sector through initiatives such as Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC).
Initial Teacher Training (ITT) is responding to these developments by raising the profile of LOtC in their training courses and many institutions, particularly in the light of the new QTS Standards, now plan experiences for their trainee teachers in settings for learning other than schools. It has been proved that where ITT successfully engages with museum and gallery partners, trainee teachers gain far more than just ‘how to use a museum’, they become more confident, experimental and creative classroom teachers.
This active, focused training day aims to enhance your understanding of
exactly why museum education is so important to the next generation of
teachers. Through activity and discussion you will see how the philosophy
and methods of museum teaching can transform the classroom practice of
students learning to teach. You will learn about current methods of teacher
training, the new standards trainees must achieve to qualify and the many
ways in which you can play a vital role in this process.
It has been clearly shown that collaborations forged between ITT providers
and museums are of benefit to all partners. Closer collaboration with
trainee teachers leads to improved understanding of the new QTS standards
and current methods of teacher training. It can also help museum educators
to adopt a reflective, analytical approach to teaching in museums leading
not only to a new understanding of their own practice, but for many,
providing a spring-board for development which has affected many wider areas
of
their work.
The course leaders are actively engaged in working with trainee teachers in
museums and have long experience of this work.
