This day aims to fuse innovative teaching with objects and creative learning, marrying artefact and art to give curators and educators some great new ideas to take away.

SESSION 1: TOUCH

to grips with using objects
Ceinwen Paynton & Katherine Hoare, British Museum (BM)Ceinwen
Paynton is education co-ordinator for the Portable
Antiquities Scheme (PAS), a national museum-based archaeology and education
project that works with learners of all ages to increase access to and
understanding of the past through artefacts by taking the museum and its people
out into the community.
Katharine Hoare works as part of the school and young audiences team in
the BM’s department of learning and information where she develops and delivers
learning opportunities linked to the museum's collections.

Sally Pointer, Amgueddfa Genedlaethol Caerdydd –
National Museum Cardiff (NMC)
Sally Pointer is the manager of the hands-on Glanely Gallery
at NMC. Her research interests include experimental
archaeology and cosmetics in antiquity. She is the author
of The Artifice of Beauty (2005). Historical re-enactment is
her special delight.
SESSION 2: BEYOND TOUCH
12.00 Workshop with Helen Malia (visual artist)
As an artist-trainer and resident artist Helen’s
engagement
with communities is broad, in Wales and beyond. Last
summer her work featured at two outdoor venues in the
Vale of Glamorgan. She is part-time project manager for
public art commissions with Cywaith Cymru – Artworks
Wales.

SESSION 3: LAUNCH PAD FOR LEARNING
14.00 Workshops with Dylan Adams (music) &
Sue Morgan
(creative writing)
Dylan Adams teaches in the primary sector. He is
currently
researching music as a learning enhancer at University of
Wales Institute, Cardiff. During the spring term 2007 he is
on sabbatical at NMC working with colleagues in the
archaeology and learning departments.
Sue Morgan is a published short story writer and
script
writer. She works in community and adult education.
This is her fourth year running a creative writing course
at the museum in partnership with Cardiff University.

15.00 Handling in old/new gallery spaces and using objects
outside of the museum
Kenneth Brassil, NMGW & Mark Lodwick, PAS
Kenneth Brassil was the later prehistorian and is
now
archaeology learning officer at NMC. His delight is working
with the public, artists, poets, musicians and writers in
Welsh and English to explore the relevance of archaeology
especially beyond the walls of a museum.
Mark Lodwick works for the PAS as the finds
co-ordinator for
Wales, based in NMC. PAS has enabled Mark to explore
the potential of archaeological material culture in both formal
and informal learning situations.
