GEM/SMC GRASS ROOTS PROJECT
Update 5 - New Learning Development Officer
October 2006
Welcome and introduction
Hi there! First of all I’d like to welcome you all to the Grass Roots website and to introduce myself.
My name’s Calum Price and I’ve recently taken over from Susan Galloway as Learning Development Officer with the Grass Roots project.
Grass Roots exists to ‘achieve a lasting legacy of material and intellectual resources to support ongoing, confident and continually improving learning provision in Scottish museums and galleries’. For the past 18 months Grass Roots has done this by delivering a number of practical guides and training sessions aimed at supporting the work of museums and galleries across Scotland. This will continue over the months to come, with a varied programme of training days scheduled and a number of new guides due to be produced. In addition Grass Roots will further develop its mentoring programme and learning support networks.
Training
Last year Grass Roots ran a number of well attended and well received training sessions for museum staff that covered a range of areas aimed at developing learning provision. In 2006/07 this will continue, as we look at areas such as child protection guidelines, ILFA and working with young people. Full details and booking forms for all of these sessions can be found on the training section of this website - http://www.gem.org.uk/grassroots/GR%20Training/grtraining.html
Resources
In its first year, Grass Roots produced a number of practical guides for museum staff to support the development of their learning programmes. These have all been posted on the resources section of this website - http://www.gem.org.uk/grassroots/GR%20Resources/6dGRResources.html
Keep your eyes on the website, as we add to this resource base in 2006/07 with a range of new, practical guides designed to support museum staff keen to develop their learning programmes.
Mentoring
This year, Grass Roots hopes to develop its mentoring programme. A bank of specialist mentors is now being established, willing to offer support and advice to museums seeking to develop their learning provision. We are continuing to seek potential mentors and, especially, museums who are interested in receiving mentoring support. More information can be found on the mentoring section of this website - http://www.gem.org.uk/grassroots/6eGRMentoring.html
In the meantime, I’d be only to happy to answer any questions about the Grass Roots project that you may have – so, please, don’t hesitate to contact me. I look forward to meeting with many of you over the months to come.
See you soon!
Calum
