Dear GEM Member,

Independent Review of GEM by Hilary McGowan

I am very pleased to write that the overall conclusion of the independent review undertaken by Hilary McGowan is that “GEM has an important job to do in museum and heritage learning”.  The Board of Trustees are delighted to know that “GEM has a loyal and appreciative membership” and that you believe GEM is good value for money, is important and helps you do your job better.  GEM’s networking opportunities are particularly valued.

There are, of course, criticisms within the review and the Trustees are determined with your support to address them.  We have embarked already on a number of initiatives which Hilary McGowan has recommended, for example, improving the advocacy of GEM, its range of stakeholders, a review of area convenors and their work, the restructuring of committees, and implementation of new financial controls at GEM Support Office.  Fundraising and creating a more professional, up-to-date, relevant image for GEM are also high priorities.

The response which Hilary McGowan had to her questionnaires was extremely good with high returns and this has enabled the Trustees to obtain a clear idea of what you regard as priorities, so that we may serve your interests to the best advantage and extend the influence and strength of GEM as an organisation with a very important job to do.

Thank you for all your support to the Trustees in carrying out this review and I look forward to visiting some of the areas this year to talk with you and importantly to meet you at the Durham conference.

Yours sincerely

GEOFFREY C BOND D.L.

GEM Chair
