Volunteer!  Ways to help GEM

There are many ways in which you can help GEM to promote the importance of learning through museums, galleries and other cultural organisations.

We do need your help - and helping GEM can also play an important part in your own professional development.

Here are some suggestions, some small, some big:

● Write an article for the GEM News

The News Editor is always happy to receive articles up to about 700 words long.

● Write an article for the GEM Journal

The Journal Editor would like to hear from practitioners who can offer articles which critically appraise the theory and practice of museum education.

● Edit responses to a jiscmail question for the website

Many members would like to see the answers to the interesting questions raised on the GEM email discussion list.  So if you have asked one of those questions, collect the answers together and send them to the GEM Website Editor to go in the members' section of the website.

● Be GEM's archivist

Do you think you can organise GEM's mountain of paper?  Have you got some spare time?  Do you live close to the GEM office and our archives in Chatham, Kent?  If you do then you could be just the person we are looking for - contact the GEM office.

● Be the moderator of GEM's new website forum

Are you computer/web forum literate?  Do you love chatting but also have a strict streak?  Then you could become the moderator of GEM's new forum which will open in a few weeks.  Please contact the GEM office if the post appeals.

● Write or edit material for this website

Perhaps you have written some material that you think deserves a wider audience, or feel that some existing material on this website needs updating.  Then send it in to the website editor!

Or maybe you would like to something fairly tedious but necessary such as checking all the external links which tend to change, and re-linking them if possible?

● Join one of GEM's project groups or committees

GEM has a number of committees looking after training, publications, PR, for example.  If you have experience in one of these areas and would like to help by organising a national training day or helping to put one of our publication together, then get in touch.  We have a real need at the moment for members with experience in PR and marketing.

● Become a GEM Convenor

Can you organise training days and do you get on with other people?  Then becoming a GEM convenor is just the job for you!  You will need to set aside several days a year to do the work, but the rewards are great.  Speak to an existing convenor for the real story.

● Become a GEM Trustee

If you are an experience educator and feel that you have the time and energy to take GEM forward then you could be the perfect candidate!  Contact one of the Trustees or the Director for more information.

● Organise an area training day

Your local area convenor would be delighted to hear from you if you can offer a venue and offer to organise an area training day.

● Organise a national training day

If you've organised a successful training day which you think has a wider appeal then why not turn it into a national training day.

● Organise an annual conference

For the ultimate experience, think about hosting GEM's annual conference.  A big effort is required, but the rewards are great.

● Think of your own task

There are many ways of helping.  If you can think of a way not listed here and are willing to undertake it then please get in touch.
